Students, faculty and staff have access to the following AI tools through the University of Kentucky. This guide will walk you through accessing both platforms using your UK credentials.
GenAI Software Available Through UK
Microsoft Copilot
What is Microsoft Copilot? Copilot is Microsoft's generative AI chatbot that is integrated into the Microsoft 365 suite. It can help with writing, data analysis, email composition, document creation, and various productivity tasks. It can be used as a stand alone tool or across Office applications. According to Microsoft, users who access Copilot through their university-provided M365 account (linkblue ID) are afforded some privacy privileges that are less available with free versions of GAI chatbots. In the case of Copilot, data entered into the Copilot chat (when logged in with a linkblue ID) should remain within the Microsoft 365 service boundaries. Please keep in mind, though, that this version of Copilot is not FERPA or HIPPA compliant. Users looking for FERPA- or HIPPA-compliant versions of Copilot can purchase licenses through UK's Dell vendor.
Access Copilot by completing the following steps:
- Open any web browser
- Navigate to the UK Microsoft 365 Portal
- Sign in using your LinkBlue credentials
- From the Microsoft 365 dashboard, select the Copilot tile to launch it directly.
You can also access Copilot if you are signed into your Outlook email in a browser:
- Look for the app launcher (often called the "waffle") in the top-left corner
- This appears as a 3×3 grid of square dots
- Click on the app launcher to open the Microsoft 365 apps menu
- Scroll through the available applications to find Microsoft 365 Copilot
- Click on Copilot to launch the application
Once Copilot opens, you can:
- Ask questions and get AI-powered responses
- Request help with writing and editing
- Analyze data and create summaries
- Generate content for presentations and documents
