Prison Education Faculty Learning Community

UK personnel (faculty, instructors, PTIs, graduate teaching assistants, and staff) who have experience or interest in local prison education are invited to participate in the Prison Education Faculty Learning Community (PrEFLC).

Co-facilitated by Dr. Jill Abney, Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, and Dr. Diana Byrne, College of Engineering, this Faculty Learning Community will collaboratively explore existing contexts of college-in-prison programs and the pedagogical opportunities and challenges they involve. This transdisciplinary cohort will use a shared reading as a provocation for conversation. The group will meet twice in fall 2026 and then twice more in spring 2027. The group will work together to develop an ongoing resource for compiling and sharing information regarding existing prison education work in the state of Kentucky along with key contacts and organizations. The PreFLC is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 2440917. 

Participants will receive copies of the book, Critical Perspectives on Teaching in Prison: Students and Instructors on Pedagogy Behind the Wall, edited by Rebecca Ginsburg. Fall and spring meetings will be scheduled with participants’ schedules in mind. Send questions to Jill.abney@uky.edu.
