Dr. Laura Carter-Stone joined CELT as a faculty/instructional consultant after earning her PhD in Teaching, Learning, and Diversity from Vanderbilt University. Her dissertation explores how instructors might adapt practices from the art of theatrical improvisation to create more democratic and enlivening learning communities. Laura’s teaching and research interests also include active and collaborative learning, equitable and authentic modes of assessment, and promoting student leadership. She draws on her training as a teacher-scholar and educational researcher to help instructors improve their teaching through cycles of purposeful experimentation, analysis, and critical reflection.

Prior to joining CELT, Laura was a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt’s AdvancED, the Institute for the Advancement of Higher Education (formerly the Center for Teaching). In her role at AdvancED, she supported faculty, postdocs, and graduate students from a variety of disciplines in becoming even more equitable, innovative, and effective teachers. A proud UK alumna, Laura earned her M.S. in Social and Philosophical Issues in Education from the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation.
