Facilitating Discussions Around Challenging Topics

Leading an effective class discussion depends on many variables and requires introspection, attention to the tendencies of students, and extensive preparation. There is no set formula for running a perfect discussion but there are helpful steps instructors can take when planning those discussions. Join us for this in-person session where we will explore some of these strategies and troubleshoot challenges that can arise during discussion-based activities.  NB: This workshop counts toward the Inclusive Teaching Badge.

This workshop will focus on resources and strategies for teaching students to collaborate effectively in alignment with the Kentucky Graduate Profile essential skill. We will focus on ways to create opportunities for students to practice the skill in specific disciplinary contexts.

Pedagogy of Play Summer Camp

Playful learning in higher education can deepen engagement, foster creativity, and support well-being—all without sacrificing academic rigor. When students interact with curricula through play, they become more motivated, curious, and willing to take intellectual risks. During this three-day "summer camp" participants will apply play-based approaches to their teaching, and design a playful assessment for their course(s).

Kentucky Network for Supporting High Impact Practices (KYnsHIP) Conference

Join us for the inaugural KYnsHIP Conference hosted by the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment (M-G CAFE), supported by The Bill Gatton Foundation. This conference aims to foster innovation in education by exploring high-impact practices in teaching and learning and features dynamic workshops, a keynote address from Dr. Sarah L. Bunnell from Elon University, and opportunities to connect with educators from across Kentucky and beyond.

Better Practices in Student Peer Review

In this workshop, we will explore effective strategies for implementing student peer review that enhances both the review process and student learning. Focusing on practical techniques, we’ll discuss how to guide students in giving and receiving constructive feedback, while fostering a collaborative environment that supports skill development in critical thinking and revision. Participants will learn how to design peer review assignments that are clear, structured, and aligned with learning goals, as well as how to create a safe space for students to engage with each other’s work.

Better Practices in Student Group Work

In this workshop, we will explore effective strategies for fostering student engagement and skill development through collaborative group work. Focusing on practical techniques, we’ll discuss how to guide students in building essential skills such as assigning roles, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork while navigating group dynamics. Participants will learn how to design meaningful group projects that not only encourage active participation but also help students develop transferable skills that are crucial for success beyond the classroom.

Graduate Badge: Learning Through Discussion

Classroom discussions can be a powerful learning experience for students. This workshop will engage participants in reflecting on why discussions are an effective pedagogical tool, but also what the challenges and barriers are to holding effective discussions. What structures and strategies can we implement to facilitate deep discussions and motivate student engagement?

This session will feature an overview of the Canva platform and its tools, along with specific examples of how to incorporate Canva into your classroom activities. We'll wrap up with a discussion and time for questions, ensuring you leave with practical strategies for integrating Canva into your teaching.
