Pedagogy of Play Summer Camp

Playful learning in higher education can deepen engagement, foster creativity, and support well-being—all without sacrificing academic rigor. When students interact with curricula through play, they become more motivated, curious, and willing to take intellectual risks. During this three-day "summer camp" participants will apply play-based approaches to their teaching, and design a playful assessment for their course(s).

Start-to-Finish Assignment Design

How much instruction is too much? How much feedback is enough? In this workshop, we’ll take a deep dive into designing assignments that guide students toward success without overloading you—or them. From crafting clear, concise instructions to streamlining your feedback process, we’ll explore strategies for creating assignments that are both meaningful and manageable. Bring an assignment you’re working on, or start fresh, and leave with actionable ideas you can implement right away.

Authentic Assessments

In this workshop, we will explore effective strategies for designing and implementing authentic assessments that align with real-world applications and engage students in meaningful ways. Focusing on practical techniques, we’ll discuss how to create assessments that go beyond traditional tests and encourage students to demonstrate their learning through projects, presentations, and other performance-based tasks. Participants will learn how to develop assessments that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity while also providing opportunities for reflection and self-assessment.

Designing Assignments Using Virtual Reality

Are you curious about virtual reality but unsure how to get started? Join us for an in-person workshop where we will discuss best practices for using VR in assignments. We will dedicate time to brainstorming ideas for your classroom and explore VR applications. Metaquest headsets will be provided, but feel free to bring your own VR device if you have one.

Getting Started with Rubrics

Are your students asking you for rubrics for their assignments and projects, but you don’t really know where to begin? This session will introduce faculty and instructors to several different kinds of rubrics, and participants will go through the process of making a “checklist rubric” that will help clarify your expectations while simultaneously speeding up your grading.

Assignment Design with AI in Mind: Design Lab

This session is a continuation of the workshop series exploring assignment design with AI in mind. Attendees should bring an existing assignment to the session to share. During this session, we will collaborate with one another to craft a transparent assignment that includes how Generative AI may be used by students.

Assignment Design with AI in Mind: Hands-on Exploration

This in-person exploratory session is designed to support instructors who are interested in how GenAI can contribute to learning in their classes. We invite participants to bring an existing assignment or assignment idea to actively consider possibilities for incorporating AI. This session will be participant-driven and make space for guided first-hand experience with popular AI tools. Please bring a device (laptop or tablet) and an assignment to the session. We will be primarily exploring tools that are either free or accessible to UK faculty, staff, and students.
