Getting Started with AI: How AI Works and Why that Matters for Teaching and Learning

Understanding the basic functions of large language models (LLMs) is essential for successfully navigating teaching and learning in the AI age. Considering how AI works can help inform your own teaching practices, assignment design, and how you coach students to use (or not use) the tools ethically and responsibly. Join us for this session to learn how AI tools are trained, how they use information, and what we as users should have in mind when we interact with their outputs.

Teaching with AI: Assignment Design with Modern AI in Mind

Integrating generative AI into student learning activities requires some creativity and experience with examples. This workshop will offer strategies and examples for designing assignments that allow students to build skills with AI. Moving beyond just comparing human and AI inputs, this session will consider the unique additions AI can add to activities and assignments while still prioritizing learning.

Getting Started with AI: Communicating with Students about AI

Perhaps the single most important step instructors can take to set students up for success for using AI ethically and responsibly for teaching and learning is through thoughtful and collaborative communication. Communicating expectations about AI use (or lack thereof) requires extensive reflection with your course materials in mind. This session will provide useful tools for fostering transparency and trust around AI use in teaching and learning while also inviting students into conversation with you and each other.

Teaching with AI: Enhancing Learning with Custom Agents/Chatbots

Custom AI chatbots can provide engaging opportunities for students to interact with content, simulate practice scenarios, practice skills, and receive feedback. This hands-on session will introduce how to build and prompt tailored chatbots designed specifically for your courses. We will share some examples and explore the benefits and shortcomings of chatbots as an instructional tool. No advanced technical skills are needed.
