Description 

This five-session program will explore the unique challenges, strengths, and experiences of first-generation college students with the goal of developing and refining actionable insights for student learning and success. Each session will be facilitated by a different individual or group with expertise that is deeply connected to UK’s educational and student success mission. 

Goals 

  • Identify multiple perspectives and approaches to supporting first-generation students’ academic success. 
  • Develop strategies for supporting student learning in coursework and other academic contexts. 
  • Design a plan for implementing insights from the program in future teaching or other academic/educational support activities.

Who is Eligible?

We invite faculty of any type (lecturers as well as regular, special, and clinical title series) with instructional responsibilities as well as staff with course-based instructional responsibilities and graduate students with instructional responsibilities or who aspire towards instructional responsibilities to participate.

NB: this program will be submitted for review as a digital badge program. Pending approval, participants who (1) attend all five sessions and (2) submit reflective materials (instructions to be distributed during the program) will meet the requirements of the proposed badge program. This series will be held in-person with no virtual attendance option and is intended to be offered on a semi-regular basis.
