Where to Begin with AI and Teaching?
In the age of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is important to have a thorough sense of your own approach toward AI in your teaching and to communicate your expectations clearly to students. In addition to a course policy, often it is helpful to have specific guidelines for each assignment and activity. To support you in developing these instructional materials, CELT offers a Student AI Use Scale, course policies examples, and a guide to writing your own policy.
If you are unsure where to begin, here are some steps on how to plan your approach.
- Take a look at the Student AI Use scale and consider which of those options best fit your assignments and the learning goals of your course.
- Read some example course AI policies and adapt on for your syllabus.
- If those examples don't work for you, design your own policy using this guide.
- Then, if you are interested in teaching or learning with GAI, check out our strategies for supporting students in exploring and engaging with AI.
