Over the past few years, traumatic events have significantly impacted students—and instructors—in higher education. When a potentially traumatic incident occurs on or off campus, how we respond and communicate with students makes a difference in their ability to stay engaged with instructors, peers, and coursework. In this workshop we will discuss important pedagogical actions in the aftermath of an event, how to decide whether or not to devote class time to discussion, and, if so, how to facilitate a discussion of events. We will work through a case study to practice how one might approach different scenarios. NB: this virtual workshop can be applied towards the inclusive teaching badge.
