CELT launched the Teaching Innovation Institute in spring 2020 as a year-long, cohort-based faculty development experience designed around collaborative, cross-disciplinary explorations of innovative teaching practices. To share the work of faculty in that 2020 cohort, CELT is excited to announce the release of the third volume of Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning, an open access journal hosted by UK Libraries' UKnowledge repository. This special issue of Greater Faculties features flash essays from faculty members across the disciplines that outline their implementations of new pedagogical approaches as they navigated the challenges of an emerging global pandemic.

We're especially proud of how the contributions in this volume position Institute participants not only as innovative teachers but also as ambassadors for our teaching mission, offering their experiences and insights so that we all might reflect critically (and compassionately) on our teaching and try new things.

The essays are organized into four sections. The first, “Digital Assignments for Real-World Application,” centers on the idea of using digital technologies to facilitate assignments that require students to apply their content knowledge to real-world problems. The second section, “Increasing Access and Interaction,” explores instructional additions that sought to increase student access to challenging or complex concepts. Section three, “Cloud-based Applications for Collaborative Learning,” offers suggestions for facilitating small group assignments, feedback exchange, conversations, and brainstorming. The fourth section, “Instruction in Different Modalities,” takes a broader view of teaching during uncertain times and examines the state of teaching in increasingly digital and augmented learning environments.
