Designing Slides To Reduce Cognitive Load & Support Memory

Many instructors use slides to support course content and engage their students. However, there are some simple ways to create slides that are more effective for both learners and instructors. This Zoom workshop will suggest best practices and help you get started designing your slides to reduce cognitive load and better support memory.

Using UDL to Leverage Trauma-Informed Principles

The practices of trauma-informed teaching and the evidence-based strategies of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) overlap in many areas. This session will help faculty understand some of the basic tenets of both of these teaching frameworks, and provide practical strategies that can be included in your course today.

Addressing Student Academic Accommodations

In this zoom session, CELT and the Disability Resource Center (DRC) partner up to discuss the changes to the system for communicating student accommodation needs to instructors by providing an overview of the new accommodations com Accessible Information Management (AIM) system. The session demonstrate how to access Instructor Notification Letters (INLs) through the AIM Instructor Portal and provide next steps for supporting their students based on the academic accommodations listed in those INLs.

Teaching Neurodivergent Students

The prevalence of neurodivergent students in higher education continues to rise as more and more students seek out diagnoses. Meanwhile, many other students who may need accommodations go undiagnosed. The good news is that there are some simple adjustments you can make in your courses that support students who are neurodivergent (regardless of whether they have an official diagnosis).

UK Faculty Elevate Teaching at CELT UDL Boot Camp

On May 14-16, faculty from nine colleges participated in the three-day CELT UDL Boot Camp, during which they explored and applied the ideas of UDL using design thinking approaches that asked participants to see their courses through a student-oriented lens.

UDL Staff Boot Camp

This three-day CELT Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Boot Camp will introduce staff to the theory and practice of Universal Design for Learning (UDL): an inclusive, research-based planning framework that helps educators reduce learning barriers through proactive design. Staff will explore and apply UDL-informed approaches to their work with the goal of fostering equitable and accessible learning environments for all students. Lunches and light breakfasts will be provided for all three days.

CELT Launches Digital Badging Program

We are excited to announce the formal launch of our digital badging program at CELT, with our inaugural badge on inclusive teaching. CELT badges are designed to recognize sustained inquiry and development on important topics in teaching and learning, and to support the professional advancement of faculty, graduate students, and instructional staff at UK.

Assignment Design Lab

When the deadline approaches for a major assignment, have you been barraged by students asking clarifying questions or requesting extensions? Have you been perplexed by what students submitted? For this collaboratory, we ask that you bring an assignment so that together we will apply Design Thinking and Universal Design for Learning principles to make the assignment more transparent.
